We often talk about understanding other cultures in our work and play. However, it is not until you have to deliver to challenging timescales and budgets, within unfamiliar cultures, that you get a true appreciation of how important it really is to understand how your people tick. In fact, your reputation may well depend on it.
Innovation touched down in Hong Kong mid-2010. We had two projects to run for different clients. One project was working for AIA and with Towers Watson (now Willis Towers Watson - WTW) to manage the actuarial work streams of the AIA IPO. We had 12 work streams, of which 10 involved different countries within the Asian region. There was only one project manager to bring it all together. The project was successful and gave us a deep insight into the different regional cultures, from a delivery perspective, from Australasia through South East Asia and into North Asia.
We went on to manage a number of international projects for WTW that involved having project managers both in the UK and Hong Kong (and other Asian geographies). These included the sale of the Asian insurance assets of a Dutch Bank and rolling out actuarial modelling software across the globe for a Japanese insurance company.
The other project we commenced in 2010 was for Prudential where we were managing the project to domesticate their Hong Kong branch. This was a large project that took over three years to deliver. Innovation had a project team of about 6 people based in Hong Kong and the UK.
